CE SAIN Lecture Series on May 06, 2019

May 06, 2019: The Center of Excellence on Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Nutrition (CE SAIN) of Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) facilitated a lecture series on “Sprinkler Irrigation on Crop Production” presented by Mr. Nut Nareth, Head of Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering and CE SAIN Scholar, Royal University of Agriculture. (Click here for the slide presentation PDF 2.8 MB)

Mr. Nut Nareth graduated his master degree in Agricultural Engineering in the field of Soil and Water Engineering from Khon Kaen University, Thailand. Currently, he is the head of the Department of Soil and Water Engineering, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering, RUA. Moreover, he is also a Ph.D. student at RUA in the academic year 2018-2021 which is financially supported by USAID through CE SAIN.

Sprinkler irrigation systems apply irrigation water to the plants from above. One positive feature of sprinkler irrigation from above is that it supplies water to most of the top of the root zone with relatively low investment and low maintenance costs (Heemskerk et al., 1997). Each sprinkler head type has a particular circular water distribution pattern; multiple sprinkler heads with short distances between emitters can be used to create a more uniform distribution pattern, but inherently sprinkler systems have uneven water distribution. For some crops, wetting of the foliage introduces a higher risk of plant disease development. Thus, this short lecture would give you some concepts on the preparation of your field with good management of water while installing sprinkler irrigation.
